Support Your Child’s Learning

Washington state has teamed up with GreatKids! to provide online resources and web-based educational activities that will help you understand and support your child’s learning.
Understanding Student Scores
The Understanding Student Scores website from the Washington state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) offers a visual guide that explains the main parts of the Family Report (also known as the Student Score Report). Parents can use drop-down menus for grade, subject, and score range to access information about the knowledge and skills represented by each student’s scores, along with some sample items from the Smarter Balanced assessments. There is also a section containing links to other resources designed for parents.

Easy steps to understand Smarter Balanced score report claims and get resources

• Grab your child’s score report and go to GreatKids!
• Select your child’s grade, subject, and area of interest to learn about student expectations.
• Watch videos and access resources like games and activities to help your child improve academically.

K-8 Online Resources
GreatKids! also provides a resource called Milestones. This is a free, online collection of videos aimed at helping parents understand grade-level expectations in grades K-8. Milestones show what student success looks like in reading, writing and math – grade by grade – and provides games and activities to help your child learn.

BGPS’ Smarter Balanced Assessments

The Smarter Balanced assessment replaced state tests in English and math for grades 3-8, 10, and 11 beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. These assessments measure students’ learning of the new state standards and will provide parents and teachers with better information to monitor student progress and help them be successful in their learning. This new assessment is:

• “Smarter” because portions of it are adaptive. This means the difficulty of questions adjusts depending on students’ responses.
• “Balanced” because it is part of a complete assessment system – including interim assessments and other resources – that helps teachers better prepare students for success.
